Mosquitoes with
Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile Virus (WNV) were confirmed
August 24 (EEE) and August 25 (WNV) in surveillance traps set by the Mass.
Dept. of Public Health (MDPH) in the Bolton Flats area off Still River Rd.
CMMCP has coordinated with the Nashoba Associated Board of Health and Bolton
town officials and spraying in the northwest part of town was done during the
evening of Monday August 30, 2010
from 8pm until 10:30pm.
Spraying was done
from the roadside using pickup trucks. Information on spraying can be found
here: http://www.cmmcp.org/adulticide.htm.
The pesticide used is called Anvil 10+10, aka sumithrin. It is a low residual
synthetic pyrethroid (pyrethroids are copies of natural extracts called
pyrethrums found in the chrysanthemum flower and are safer to use than
pyrethrums). Information on Anvil 10+10 can be found here: http://www.cmmcp.org/anvil.htm. Information
on spraying and other effects can be found at the Mass. Dept. of Public Health’s
website here: http://www.mass.gov/?pageID=eohhs2terminal&L=6&L0=Home&L1=Consumer&L2=Community+Health+and+Safety&L3=Environmental+Health&L4=Environmental+Exposure+Topics&L5=Pesticide+Spray&sid=Eeohhs2&b=terminalcontent&f=dph_environmental_c_mosquito_anvil_application_faqs&csid=Eeohhs2
– this link refers to the aerial spraying done in southeast Mass. a few weeks
ago, but most of the information is pertinent.
MDPH has placed
additional surveillance traps in the area including the towns of Shirley and
Harvard to gauge population densities and for additional virus testing.
