Public Education

Summary:

Education to schools, civic groups, Senior Centers, general public, local and state officials about mosquito biology, our program services, mosquito control techniques and personal protection methods.

Aspects:

Educating the public about mosquitoes, their biology and personal protection measures (PPM) is an important aspect of the Central Mass. Mosquito Control Project's mission to reduce risk from mosquito-borne diseases. We accomplish this in several ways:

  1. We offer a comprehensive educational program geared towards school-aged children from Kindergarten to High School. This program is tailored to meet the needs of intended audience. Entomologists and Biologists educate students about mosquito biology and basic control techniques like source reduction (emptying containers) around the home. Mosquito larvae are left in the classroom to allow the students to watch the mosquito's metamorphosis from larvae to adult.
  2. A specialized program for senior citizens, and at-risk group form mosquito-born diseases, is offered through local Senior Centers. This program has emphasis on personal protection measures (PPM) and avoidance techniques.
  3. Presentations to the public-at-large, as well as local and state officials are geared towards program services, as well as mosquito biology, disease transmission and PPM.
  4. We produce educational handouts, and all member Town Halls, Libraries and other public gathering spaces are stocked with information on our programs, personal protection measures, and how the homeowner can reduce mosquito populations in their own area.
  5. Our website has full information on our program, including spray schedules, pesticide information, PPM, current mosquito activity, etc.
  6. We are active on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube
