Resting boxes

Resting boxes

Special wooden boxes, painted red inside and gray or black outside can provide resting habitat for mosquitoes during the heat of the day. These traps can sometimes produce collections of Culiseta melanura, and important species in the transmission of EEE.

CMMCP deploys these traps in selected areas in our service area to monitor mosquito population and distribution. Surveillance techs will cover the boxes and spray a sedative inside to knock out the mosquitoes, they are then aspirated using a battery powered aspirator and brought back to our lab for identification.
